Why We Worry
Module 1, Lesson 1 of Managing Worry & Overthinking
Worry is the mind's attempt to prepare for possible problems. In small doses it can be helpful: it prompts you to check the details, plan ahead or seek information. It becomes a problem when it loops without leading to any useful action.
Overthinking often feels productive because it involves so much mental effort. Yet repeatedly replaying a conversation or imagining every possible outcome rarely produces new answers. Instead it tends to increase tension and make decisions harder.
Understanding why worry happens is the first step to responding to it differently. In this course you will learn to tell helpful problem-solving from unhelpful loops, and practise simple techniques for stepping out of the loop.
Try this
The next time you notice yourself worrying, ask: is there an action I can take about this today? Write down either the action or the words 'no action today'.
