5 Daily Creative Warm-Up Prompts

  • Monday — List 10 uses for a paperclip that aren’t “holding paper.” Push past the first 3 obvious ones.
  • Tuesday — Describe your morning using only sound words (no visuals allowed).
  • Wednesday — Sketch or write your mood as if it were a weather forecast.
  • Thursday — Combine two unrelated objects on your desk into one invented product. Name it.
  • Friday — Finish this sentence 5 different ways: “The last thing anyone expected was…”

The Constraint-Based Idea Generator

Blank pages are the enemy of creativity — not lack of talent. The fix is counterintuitive: add limits instead of removing them. A tight constraint forces your brain past the obvious, cliché answers and into original territory.

Try this simple version: pick a normal idea you’re stuck on, then force it through one random constraint — a word, a color, a number, or a time limit. Generate 5 variations before you’re allowed to stop.

Example: “Design a birthday card” feels flat. Add the constraint “using only shapes found in nature” and suddenly you have five stronger directions in under two minutes.

6 Ways to Beat Creative Block Today

  • Lower the bar on purpose — give yourself permission to make something “bad” first
  • Change your input, not your effort — new music, a walk, a different room
  • Set a 10-minute timer and produce volume, not quality
  • Work backwards from a finished example instead of a blank page
  • Talk the idea out loud to another person, or even to yourself
  • Switch mediums for 5 minutes — sketch it, say it, or move it before you write it
