What Attention Is
Module 1, Lesson 1 of Focus & Attention Training
Attention is the part of your mind that decides what you notice and what you ignore. At any moment there is far more around you than you could ever process: sounds, messages, thoughts, plans, physical sensations. Attention is the filter that chooses one small slice of that and brings it into focus.
It helps to think of attention as having two modes. The first is deliberate: you choose to read this paragraph, finish a report or listen to a friend. The second is automatic: a notification sound, a movement in the corner of your eye or a sudden worry pulls you away without asking. Both are normal and both are useful. Problems start when the automatic mode wins most of the time.
The encouraging part is that deliberate attention behaves like a skill. It can be trained with short, repeated practice, and it responds strongly to your environment. Throughout this course you will work on both: changing what pulls at you, and strengthening your ability to come back when you drift.
Try this
For one working hour today, keep a pen and paper beside you. Each time you notice your attention leave the task, make a small tick and write one word for what pulled you away. Do not try to change anything yet; simply observe.
