Workshop Safety Habits

Module 1, Lesson 1 of Beginner Woodworking

Safety in woodworking is mostly about habits rather than equipment. Most injuries happen when someone is rushed, tired, distracted or working with a dull or unsuitable tool.

Basic habits include wearing eye protection whenever you cut, drill or sand; keeping both hands behind the cutting edge; clamping work securely instead of holding it; keeping tools sharp; keeping the floor and bench clear; and never wearing loose sleeves, jewellery or untied long hair near moving tools. Dust is also a hazard, so use a dust mask when sanding and ventilate the space.

Know your limits. This course uses hand tools and a small number of common power tools. Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for any tool you use, and stop if something feels unsafe.

Try this

Walk around your work area and list three things you could change today to make it safer, such as clearing the floor, adding a clamp or finding safety glasses.
