Your Basic Sewing Kit
Module 1, Lesson 1 of Sewing & Mending Basics
You do not need much to start sewing and mending by hand. A small, well-chosen kit will handle most everyday repairs: loose buttons, fallen hems, small tears and split seams.
A basic kit includes a pack of assorted hand-sewing needles, all-purpose polyester thread in a few common colours (black, white, navy, grey and beige), sharp fabric scissors kept only for fabric, small snips for thread, pins and a pincushion, a thimble, a tape measure, a seam ripper and a fabric marking pencil or chalk.
Keep everything together in one box or tin so it is easy to find when something needs fixing. Over time you can add specialist items, but this simple kit is enough for every lesson in this course.
Try this
Gather what you already have at home and compare it with the list above. Write down the two or three items you are missing.
Key takeaways
