Four-step flow: log every thirty minutes, label blocks with four categories, total them, and read the results without judgment.

You cannot fix a schedule you cannot see. Today you track every thirty minutes of your day and produce a full, honest accounting of where your time actually goes — not where you believe it goes.

How to Track Without Cheating

Set a repeating thirty-minute timer or use a simple log sheet with a row per half hour. Each time it fires, write down what you actually did in that block in five words or fewer: email, meeting, deep work, scrolling, snack, switching. Log it in the moment, not from memory at night; reconstructed logs quietly flatter us. If a block was split between three things, write all three — fragmentation is exactly what you are trying to surface.

Categorize at Day’s End

Tonight, color or label every block with one of four categories: deep work that required focus, shallow work like admin and messages, maintenance like meals and commuting, and leakage — time you cannot account for or spent somewhere you did not choose. Total the hours per category. Most people are startled by two numbers: how little true deep work happened and how large leakage is.

Read the Log Without Judgment

The audit is data, not a verdict. Note your three biggest surprises, when your focus felt easiest, and which blocks were stolen rather than spent. These observations feed directly into tomorrow’s distraction map and Day 3’s energy mapping.

Action Step

Complete a full waking-day log in thirty-minute blocks, categorize every block into the four categories, total each category, and write down your three surprises. Keep the log; the rest of the week is built on it.
