The Four Phases and What Each One Does

Sleep is not one state. Across a typical night you move through light sleep, deeper slow-wave sleep and REM sleep in cycles of roughly ninety minutes, and each phase does a different job. Understanding that structure is the first step to protecting it, because most people damage one phase without realising it and then blame their tiredness on something else.

Light sleep: the transition

The first two stages are shallow. Your heart rate slows, your temperature drops and your brain starts to disconnect from the room. This is where you are most easily woken, which is why a noisy or bright environment fragments the start of the night and delays everything that follows.

Slow-wave sleep: physical repair

Deep sleep dominates the first half of the night. This is when tissue repair, immune activity and the clearing of metabolic waste from the brain are most active. Late bedtimes and alcohol both cut into this phase, which is why a late night feels physically heavy even if you sleep in.

REM: memory and emotion

REM sleep expands toward morning. It consolidates what you learned and processes what you felt. Cutting the night short with an early alarm removes REM first, which shows up as a foggy, irritable morning rather than a sore body.

Tonight, note your bedtime and wake time. Tomorrow, write one sentence about which felt worse: your body or your mood. That is your first clue about which phase you are short-changing.
