Capture and Map

The Idea Capture System

Every other tool in this course depends on one simple foundation: having a reliable way to catch ideas when they appear. Ideas arrive at inconvenient moments and vanish quickly. A capture system makes sure they are recorded, stored in one place and easy to find again when you need raw material for a project.

The Three Parts of Capture

A capture system has three parts. The first is the catch: a tool that is always within reach, such as a pocket notebook or a notes app on your phone. The second is the store: one central place where all captured ideas end up, rather than a scattering of sticky notes and screenshots. The third is the review: a regular moment when you read through what you have caught and decide what to do with it.

Making Capture Frictionless

The catch tool must be faster than forgetting. If it takes more than a few seconds to record an idea, you will skip it. Choose one tool and stick with it. Record ideas in rough form: a few words, a quick sketch or a short voice memo. Do not try to develop the idea at the moment of capture; just get it down. Development happens later.

A Worked Example

Imagine an illustrator who notices an interesting shadow on a café wall. She takes a quick photo and adds a three-word note: shadow, lace, hands. That evening she moves it into her store, a single digital notebook organised by month. During her weekly review she sees it beside an older note about family heirlooms and starts sketching a series about inherited objects and their shadows.

Practice

Choose your catch tool and your store today and write down where each one lives. Commit to capturing at least three ideas a day for the next week, however small. Set a recurring weekly reminder for a fifteen-minute review. During the first review, tag each idea with a simple label such as project, maybe or play so you can find it later.

Before You Move On

This lesson belongs to the Capture and Map module of Creative Thinking Tools. Keep the notes from the practice above close by, because the next lesson, Mind Mapping for Expansion, builds directly on them. If any part of this lesson felt unclear, re-read that section before moving on rather than pushing ahead.
